I work as a special education teaching assistant in Albemarle County Public Schools. In my fifteen years of work with special needs children, many who move with wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and other adaptive devices, I see a great need for outdoor playground spaces that are universally accessible.

I am an Early Childhood Special Educator. I would absolutely bring my future classes to this playground on field trips, as well as utilize it for family events and encourage parents to bring their children of all abilities to this park for gross motor and inclusive social experiences.

An all abilities playground allows my daughter the freedom to access all of the equipment. Nothing is off limits. She is able to play with her brother, go where he goes, to meet new friends. So much of her world is isolating because of her body. This is one way of leveling the playing field.
