My daughter, Darlene is a three year old full time AAC user. She gets so excited every time we go to Pen Park and she sees the communication board! She loves that it has symbols/words that match her device- there are no other public places where she has this experience. Darlene will use the board to pick her first activity- usually the swing or the slide. She really enjoys when other kids engage with her using the board, especially when they follow her directions of “stop” and “go”. Having the communication board is a great step in creating a play environment that supports the inclusion of all children!

I work as a special education teaching assistant in Albemarle County Public Schools. In my fifteen years of work with special needs children, many who move with wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and other adaptive devices, I see a great need for outdoor play spaces that are universally accessible.

I am an Early Childhood Special Educator. I would absolutely bring my future classes to this playground on field trips, as well as utilize it for family events and encourage parents to bring their children of all abilities to this park for gross motor and inclusive social experiences.
